Ask, Seek, Knock.

“Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened…If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him!”

Matthew 7:7-8, 11, NIV

This is a passage of Scripture that The Lord has been speaking to me about for the past 5 ish weeks. It initially raised three questions for me:

  1. What are you asking for?
  2. What are you seeking/looking for?
  3. What door are you knocking on?

The Lord showed me: Whatever we choose to focus on, it will be magnified. And the true gift isn’t anything this world has to offer—the gift is looking to Him. He is always the goal and reward. But how do we practically live this out?

Ask and it will be given to you.

What are you asking for?

  • His presence?
  • The fruits of His Spirit (love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, gentleness, goodness, and self-control)?
  • His eyes and perspective?

Takeaway: It’s not about earthly gain, but spiritual growth.

Seek and you will find.

What are you seeking/looking for?

  • His will?
  • His Word?
  • His promises?
  • Blessings in your daily life?
  • Ways to love, serve, and encourage others?

Takeaway: We should be seeking more of Him and His presence, not a specific outcome to our circumstances.

Knock and the door will be opened to you.

Whose door are you knocking on?

  • Are you knocking on the door of fear? Anxiety? Control?
  • OR Are you knocking on the door to His presence?
  • Are you knocking on the door of opportunities that will draw you closer to Him?

Takeaway: We can have moments of fear, anxiety, etc. and NOT knock on their door. In those moments, we pick those things up and knock on God’s door and we bring those things to Him.

The idea of God, His Holy Spirit being the gift—the true reward was further solidified this weekend when I heard a teaching on this same passage, except from the gospel of Luke. In Luke 11:9-10, 13, NIV, it says:

“So I say to you: Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened…If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!” (Emphasis added by me.)

The good gift we receive when we ask, seek, and knock is God’s Holy Spirit—not a particular outcome, any earthly gain, etc. The gift is always His Holy Spirit. His Holy Spirit is the reward.

So my challenge to you this week is to ask, seek, and knock for this—more of His Holy Spirit. Nothing else.

As I’ve done this over the past few weeks, I can tell you this—He loves to give His children a fresh encounter with His Holy Spirit when they ask, seek, and knock.

If you’d like more on ways I engage with the Holy Spirit, let me know! I’d be happy to share in the coming weeks.
